February 2014

2-22-14 Saturday
Duluth received a lot of snow on Thursday afternoon and evening. Over a foot + blowing winds = a lot of drifting. I didn't make it into work on Friday until 11am and I took the bus. I have been shoveling my parking spots and the snow is over my head in some spots.

2-21-14 Thursday
I went skiing in the blizzard of wet snow at Hartley. A fun ski that made me very hungry. I have been reading "Cooked" by Michael Pollan and it makes me think about the time spent cooking and how it is just as valuable as the time spent eating. I decided to make a pizza using the refrigerator dough.
Unbaked (fresh tomato, green pepper, radish, red cabbage, kidney beans & garbanzo beans)
 Baked
I have had my sourdough culture brewing on my counter for a few days and decided to make buns. They turned out great. Really enjoy hand kneading the dough.

2-18-14 A Very snowy Monday
I came back to DLH on Sunday night after a 12K ski at the North End
Monday morning was sunny but then the storm rolled in and we got 6" of fresh snow. I thought about fat biking but decided it was a perfect  night for snowshoeing. I went down to 4th St and then all the way to the top of the Bowl. Hardly any wind and so nice.

A very steep decent into the bowl. Very glad my snowshoes have crampons.

 The Hockey rinks

 The overlook shelter

Saint Scholastica all lit up [hard to capture with the camera]
Latter I made a loaf of bread from my 5min recipe from the refrigerator dough.

2-8-14 - Friday - Went to GR for some time at home and XC skiing on trails I had not been to in a long time
2-9-14 Saturday
Mom, Dad and I went down to the land to snowshoe in. I haven't been here since 2006. The pines have grown a lot.

 The little bunkhouse

I had to keep warm and burn off some calories from delicious oatmeal bars. I hiked around over to the point with Annie and found a lot of deer beds. 3 under the tree.
On the point looking back at the cabin
On the deer trail behind the cabin.
 Some big shoes
A hole in the snow where a mouse burrowed down the subnivean layer
 A singletrack trail
We got back to the house and I gathered up all my motivation and drove south to the Golden Anniversary State forest to ski the Cowhorn trails. A nice system of trails with a Bigfoot cutout in the woods, primitive shelter, and a nice outhouse in the middle of the woods.
 A very salty car
A brewed awakenings lunch on Sunday. They make great food.
